Sgt. Smith served as a waist gunner for B-17 B-24 #41-29243 with Burnham's Crew. While flying a bombing mission to Wiener Neustadt, Austria, their B-24 was attacked by German fighters. Sgt. Smith was injured during this attack and did not bail when the ship crashed in Schwendgraben, Austria.
