Co-pilot with the 512th Bomb Squadron, 376th Bomb Group flying B-24's out of San Pancranzio, Italy during World War II. During a bombing run to Vienna, Austria, 2nd Lt. Wilson's aircraft was hit with flak as it was leaving the target area. The aircraft was losing altitude, and upon orders from the aircraft pilot, 2nd Lt Richard Ritter, the crew was ordered to bailout. The crew bailed out successfully while Lt Ritter and Lt Wilson maintained the aircraft, however, when Lt Wilson bailed out, the aircraft was too low for his parachute to fully deploy, and he died instantly when he landed on the ground in Knin, Croatia. Lt Ritter never left the aircraft, and died when it crashed. The surviving crew members returned to San Pancranzio on 19 January 1945. Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) #11808 source of information for this biography. 2nd Lt Wilson had a son, Douglas Ralph Wilson, who was born on June 1st, 1945, five months after his death.
