William served as a Staff Sergeant & Engineer/Gunner on B-24G “Maiden USA” (#42-78392), 777th Bomber Squadron, 464th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Jackson County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Married.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24 was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire over Italy and crashed into the Adriatic Sea during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
