James served as a Sergeant & Left Waist Gunner on B-17G #42-97444, 340th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 17, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-97444 took off from Amandola, Italy on a bombing mission over Anzio, Italy. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire. They were given the command to bail out, however only one parachute was seen by other planes in the area before B-17G #42-97444 exploded in mid-air during the war.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
