Michael served as a First Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-24J "Hey Doc" #42-109813, 344th Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, Michigan prior to the war.

B-24J #42-109813 took off from Lecce, Italy on a bombing mission over the Avisio Viaducts in Italy. Due to bad weather they were instructed to return to base before the mission got underway. They were last seen turning into the clouds and never returned to base during the war.

It was later discovered that they crashed off the coast of Italy. The remains of only two crewmen were found. Those of T/Sgt Hagan and 1st Lt. Howell.

Michael was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
