Ainsworth served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on A-36A #42-83917, 17th Bomber Squadron, 27th Bomber Group, Light, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

(Note: Another "Ainsworth B. Jones", who resided in New York and joined the Army Air Corps, may or may not be the same person. Records are confusing. )

Ainsworth was declared "Missing In Action" and is believed to have been shot down by ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the sea off of Sicily, Italy during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
