Joseph, who resided at 2512 West Fourth Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. LST-348, U.S. Navy during World War II.

U.S.S. LST-348, while sailing from Nisida to Anzio, Italy, was struck on her port side by a torpedo fired from the German U-boat U-410. LST-348 was struck once more on her port side before orders were received to abandon ship.

Twenty-four members of the ship's crew perished, while 79 were rescued .....

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and three months and was decorated with a Purple Heart.
