Gerald served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24 #42-95285, 512th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 18, 1943 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-24 #42-95285, with a crew of 11, was one of 28 B-24's that took off on mission #395 which was a raid on Lintz, Austria. On the way back from the mission B-24 #42-95285 experienced a mechanical failure which was believed to be due to anti-aircraft fire over the target and ditched into the Adriatic Sea. " 7 " of the crew survived, " 3 " of the crew were "MIA", and one later died of wounds (DOW).

Gerald was declared "Missing In Action" in this ditching during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
