Son of Wilfred J Gloddy (1895-1937) & Bertha M Vigneault Gloody (1897-1971).

Richard served as a Seaman, First Class, & Armed Guard, SS John Harvey, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Tilton, Belknap County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when the John Harvey was sunk in the Air raid on Bari, Italy during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

During this air raid the German's killed over 1,000 people, and sank 17 ships including the SS John Harvey. The John Harvey was carrying a shipment of chemical munitions containing mustard agent to the Mediterranean theater. When the John Harvey was hit a huge explosion occured, causing liquid sulfur mustard to spill into the water and a cloud of sulfur mustard vapor to blow over the city.
