Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until September 26, 1944, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Gerard served as a Seaman, Second Class, U.S.S. Skill (AM-115), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Gerard was declared "Missing In Action" when the Skill was sunk by a torpedo from German submarine U-593, commanded by Kptlt, off the North African coast during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
