Sgt. Fay lost his life in the Ploesti raid "Operation Tidal Wave" one of the most daring raids of WW2 August 1st 1943. Coming in at tree top level the Pyramiders destroy Romanian oil refineries. Sgt. Fay was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valor on this mission.
Sgt. Fay, Gunner on the ill fated flight is listed Tablets of the Missing Sicily-Rome American Cemetery Nettuno, Italy and has a Cenotaph memorial at his sister's grave Ascension Cemetery, El Toro, CA Find A Grave Memorial# 97957861 his remains were never recovered.
