From "The Parsons Sun" (Parsons, Labette County, Kansas), 1945:

Sgt. Ellsworth Is Missing in Action

Sgt. Vernon Ellsworth, 19, is missing in action in the Mediterranean area since Feb. 5, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Guy V. Ellsworth, R. 4, have been notified in a message from the war department.

Sgt. Ellsworth was a tail gunner on a Liberator. He completed his training in November and left the Topeka airbase Dec. 1 for overseas duty and was based in Italy somewhere in the Naples vicinity. Another Parsons youth Bob Ellis is stationed at the same base.

Sgt. Ellsworth was graduated from LCCHS, Altamont, in May 1943, and worked as a welder in a defense plant in California until November of that year when he enlisted in the air forces.

While home on a furlough last summer he was married [17 August 1944] to Margaret Drews, Altamont, a senior at LCCHS this year. Her last letter from him was dated Feb. 3 in which he stated he was "going on a trip" the next day which relatives believe was his first mission since going to Italy.
