Philip served as a Seaman, First Class, S.S. John Harvey, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Philip was declared "Missing In Action" in what was known as the Bari Bombing Disaster in Bari, Italy during the war. The John Harvey & the Bari Port was attacked by German Ju-88 bombers causing massive explosions while the ships were unloading supplies.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
