Thomas, who resided at 1208 East Thirteenth Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Armed Guard and Gunner's Mate Third Class, on the Merchant Ship, S.S. John L. Motley, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in the sinking of the Motley during an air attack in the harbor of Bari, Italy while serving as a member of the armed guard crew during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and three months at the time of his death and was awarded a Purple Heart.
