Thomas, who resided at 1208 East Thirteenth Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Armed Guard and Gunner's Mate Third Class, on the Merchant Ship, S.S. John L. Motley, U.S. Navy during World War II.

The S.S. John L. Motley was in the Port of Bari, Italy either unloading, or waiting to unload, it's cargo of ammunition. While in the port of Bari they they were attacked by German Ju-88 bombers causing massive explosions while the ships were unloading supplies.

Unknown to all but a few .... the S.S. John Harvey was also in the Bari Port carrying a secret cargo of 2,000 M47A1 mustard gas bombs, each of which held 60–70 lb of sulfur mustard. When the S.S. John Harvey was hit it basically disintegrated which caused the liquid sulfur mustard to spill into the water, mixing with oil from the other damaged ships, and a cloud of sulfur mustard vapor to blow over the city.

Over 1,000 people were killed, "25" ships were sunk, and " 3 " other ships were damaged beyond repair.

Thomas was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and three months at the time of his death and was awarded the Purple Heart.
