Richard served as a Staff Sergeant on B-17 #41-24394, 353th Bomber Squadron, 301st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Grafton County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-17 #41-24394 took off from Saint Donat in Algeria and was on a bombing mission over Castelvetrano, Italy and did not return to base for an undetermined cause.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
