Son of Theodore Clement Briggs and Ruth Curtis Briggs.

Husband of Elizabeth Middleton Briggs whom he married on September 10, 1941. She was from Charleston, South Carolina.

William served as a Second Lieutenant, 400th Coast Artillery Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided at 52 Main Street, Pittsford, Monroe County, New York & was a member of the New York National Guard prior to the war.

He first joined the National Guard as a Private in the Coast Artillery Corps in October, 1940.

William's National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service in February 10, 1941, prior to the war, from Rochester, New York. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Bookkeeping machine operator and also as Single, without dependents.

The photo to the right shows him when he was in the National Guard prior to the war and prior to his promotion to 2nd Lt.

William was "Killed In Action" in Europe during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Service # O1045683

Some records note him as being from "South Carolina". However that is where his wife was from, not where he was from. A match on Serial Number notes that he was from Monroe County, New York based on his enlistment records. His headstone shows "South Carolina".
