GM 2/c Augsburger has been classified as dead on 10-10-1944 since he has been Missing on October 1, 1943 on the Destroyer, USS Buck {DD-420} which was sunk in the Tyrrhenian Sea by the German U-Boat {U-616} under the Command of Capt. Siegfried Koitschka, and he and his ship were sunk by the American Navy on May 14, 1944.

The USS Buck was patrolling the western waters of Italy after the Salerno landings to make certain supplies and reinforcements would arrive.

He is the son of Mrs. Lillian Lynn Augsburger of 515 West Parris Street in Morton, Illinois. His father, Mr. H.J. Augsburger, died on July 14, 1942. He is a 1938 graduate of Morton H.S., and enlisted in the Navy on November 2, 1940, and did his training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Chicago, Illinois.

Augsburger does leave four brothers, Seaman Richard with the Navy in the South Pacific, William of Peoria Heights, Illinois, Ralph of Creve Coeur, Illinois, and Pvt. James Augsburger at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and six sisters, Mrs. Ezra Rediger of Morton, Mrs. Viola Burns of Pekin, Illinois, Mrs. Marvin Davis of Tremont, Illinois, Mrs. Esther Sheppelman of Peoria Heights, Mrs. Helen Decker of Chenoa, Illinois. and Pvt. Ruth Augsburger of the Women's Army Corps at Memphis, Tennessee.
