Son of Ambrose Ignatius Ashley who resided in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

William served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Savannah (CL-42), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

William was "Killed In Action" when the Savannah was hit by a German radio-controlled Fritz X glide-bomb which caused extensive casualties aboard and serious damage to the Savannah off Salerno during the war.

William was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea.

Service # 2073589

The Savannah survived the attack and the war. She served in the task force that carried President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in early 1945.
