Son of Carl Walter and Amy Clare (Biesenthal) Almquist.

Calvin served as a Seaman, Second Class, U.S.S. Maddox (DD-622), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Buffalo, Erie County, New York prior to the war.

The Maddox, while on antisubmarine patrol about 16 miles of the shore of Sicily, was attacked by a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber. One of the bombs exploded Maddox's aft magazine, causing the ship to roll over and sink within two minutes during the war.

Calvin was declared "Missing in Action" in this sinking.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
