Joseph served as a 2nd Lt. and pilot of B-24H (#42-7617), 703rd Bomber Squadron, 445th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York State prior to the war.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in the Line Of Duty during the war. His plane and all the passengers went missing when evidently it crashed on a flight from Bouniquen field, Puerto Rico by way of Waller field, Trinidad to Atkinson field, British Guiana.

Letter to S/Sgt. Charles L. Neinfeldt's family:

In a recent letter from the war department, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Neinfeldt received confirmation of the death of their son Staff Sgt. Charles L. Neinfeldt, army air corps, who was earlier reported missing in action November 15 on an overwater flight in the Latin America area.

According to details revealed in the letter, Sgt. Neinfeldt was aboard a B-24 bomber which crashed on a flight from Bouniquen field, Puerto Rico by way of Waller field, Trinidad to Atkinson field, British Guiana.

An intensive search for the plane wreckage was eventually rewarded when an observation plane sighted parts of the plane, open parachutes, one life vest, two life rafts-one capsized-and two oxygen bottles. No sign of survivors was found, and the search was abandoned two days later.

The adjutant's letter counseled the parents to "take comfort in the knowledge that your son died while loyally serving his country."
