B-17G #44-6601 took off, with a crew of 9, from Station 142, England on a bombing mission over Rheine, Germany. After a successful bombing mission they were last seen moving away from the formation with no apparent problems. They never returned to base. It was later discovered that they had crashed near Midwoud, Netherlands and the only survivor of the crash was the pilot, 2nd Lt. Cecil K. Belton who became part of the Dutch Underground for the remainder of the war.
Melvin was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was first interred in the Community Cemetery in Midwoud, Netherlands and was later re-interred here.
