Brother Jesus works at a mine.In the 1940 census 15-year-old Ray is living with his parents and siblings Jesus 36, Lupe 32, and Lola 19, on Holly Wood road in Upper Tombstone Canyon, Bisbee. Brother Jesus works at a copper mine.Ray registered for the draft on his 18th birthday 6 Jan 1943. He was employed as a truck driver by the PD Corp Mercantile. He was 5'7" and weighed 142 lbs.Ray enlisted 21 May 1943 in Phoenix. He'd had a grammar school education and was single with dependents. He was semi-skilled in warehousing and storekeeping. He was assigned ot the 280th Field Artillery Battalion assigned to 9th Army.The 280th Field Artillery Battalion which was activated at Camp Cooke (today Vandenberg Air Force Base) in California. The Battalion was then moved to Fort Sill in Oklahoma in February 1944, for a three-month stay at Field Artillery School. Then trained for overseas duty at Camp Polk, Louisiana.The 280th FA Bn was in Germany on the west side of the Roer River northeast of Aachen in mid Feb 1945. They crossed the Roer on 24 Feb 1945.
