Pegues was flying on a combat mission on the 25th of February near Cologne, Germany in a B-26 piloted by Lt. A. N. Brown. The aircraft was seen to receive a direct hit before reaching the target. The gasoline tank in the left wing and the engine burst into flames. Bombs were salvoed and aircraft turned off to the left and went into a slow spin. It was seen to crash and explode and no parachutes were seen.
