James served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-17F "Exterminator" #42-30150, 412nd Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war.

James was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by German Fighters near Lathen, Germany causing an onboard explosion and crashed at sea during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
