Charles served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on B-17 #42-29787, 525th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Sussex County, Delaware prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 12, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as Single, without dependents.

B-17 #42-29787 took off, with a crew of 10, from Kimbolton, England on a bombing mission over Breman, Germany.

After a successful bombing mission they were first hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which damaged their B-17. Then while returning to base they were attacked by a German ME-109 fighter plane that eventually, due to the previous damage they had sustained, was able to shoot them down. They crashed about 1 mile off the coast of the Netherlands in the North Sea.

Charles was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
