Co-Pilot of B-26B-20-MA #41-31710 "General Sherman" lost on mission to Enger, Germany. Missing Air Crew Report 12341
Carl flying Co-Pilot this day. Mission target Engers RR Bridge. Very heavy flak. Bombs are dropped. Flak hits plane over target and sets engine on fire. The 3 rear crew bail out of the right waist window. Plane dives, spins, pilot regains control, fire goes out. Bombardier/Navigator helps Carl get free. They bail out of bomb bay. Pilot stays with plane until it spins again, he regains control enough to make forced landing in a field near the Rhine on the East side, North of Koblenz near Sayn. Everyone survives. Pilot and all other crew are captured, taken POW. Carl captured and executed on ground by SS. Declared MIA for one year. First burial in church cemetery, Rengsdorf, Germany. Later removed to his final resting place here, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten.
