Fred served as a Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-17G #43-38237, 527th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Colorado County, Texas prior to the war.

B-17G #43-38237 (#1) took off from Kimbolton, England on a bombing mission over Bonn, Germany. During this mission multiple B-17's were hit by enemy anti-aircraft flak.

While returning to base B-17G #43-38237 (#1), which was damaged by flak, and was below B-17G #43-38955 (#2) in formation, lost control and collided with (#2) and the propeller's of (#1) cut off the nose of (#2) causing them (#1) to crash near Westerwald, Germany during the war.

Fred was "Killed In Action" in this mid-air collision during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
