Herbert served as a First Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-17F #42-5886, 548th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 21, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted as being employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes and also as Single, without dependents.

Herbert was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by enemy aircraft and crash landed a mile from Woensdrecht Air Field, on the Holland & Belgium border during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Service # O-794624

Herbert also has a "Cenotaph" in the New Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond, New Hampshire.
