Charles served as a Staff Sergeant on B-26B "Jessie" #41-31660, 558th Bomber Squadron, 387th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 1, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen, and shovelmen and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-26 was shot down by enemy aircraft during the war. He was awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Purple Heart.
