He enlisted in the Army April 8, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a File Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
Bernard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy fighters and ditched into the North Sea during the war. He was awarded a Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
Bernard was the only airmen on this B-17 that lost his life.
