Bernard served as a Sergeant on B-17G #42-107007, 351st Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army April 8, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a File Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Bernard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy fighters and ditched into the North Sea during the war. He was awarded a Air Medal and a Purple Heart.

Bernard was the only airmen on this B-17 that lost his life.
