CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles L Barnett (ASN: 0-1010766), United States Army, for gallantry in action near *****, on ** ****, 1943. Lieutenant Barnett, Platoon Commander, Company F, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, although suffering from a painful shrapnel leg wound, volunteered to locate hidden enemy mortars registering heavy fire on the positions of his Company. Unhesitatingly he crossed open terrain through intense enemy fire until he was able to see the muzzle blasts of the mortars, He mapped their position and returned through the barrage with location data which resulted in the destruction of the enemy mortar positions. On this mission, he received a chest wound and lung injuries. Lieutenant Barnett's actions throughout the engagement were characterized by self-sacrificing courage and intelligent initiative of the highest quality. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Inscription

Captain Barnett was the Company Commander of E Company, 2/505 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.

On 12 April 1945, Captain Barnett and Major William R. Carpenter, using Kayaks, entered the Rhine River, near Cologne , Germany to search for for the body of a Paratroop killed the night before. Suddenly men on shore heard splashing water and screaming from the river. A search of the river located Captain Barnett's body. Major Carpenter was never recovered.

Captain Barnett head been award a Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, prior to his death.
