Phillip served as a Staff Sergeant and Waist Gunner on B-24J #42-50620, 700th Bomber Squadron, 445th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Blue Earth County, Minnesota and was a member of the Minnesota National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on January 6, 1941, prior to the war, from Mankato, Minnesota. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Architect and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-50620 took off, with a crew of 9 and other B-24's, from Tibenham, England on a cargo (supply) mission over Germany. While flying at 300 feet near their supply drop zone they were hit by small arm fire causing them to crash near Wesel, Germany. The B-24 was seen exploding on impact with the ground. The entire crew was Killed in Action in this crash.

Phillip was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
