*Hyman Ackerman enlisted in New York City, New York on 21 November 1942.
He entered the U.S. Army as a Private. He completed 3 years of college, worked as an electrician and was single without dependents. His parents were born in Russia.
Hyman was aboard a glider towed by the 9th TCC, 314th TCG and was KIA when his glider landed on Landing Zone N during Operation Varsity.
Statement from Raymond R. Rowland, 1st Lt, Infantry, Ass´t Adj Hqs Sp Trps:
"Circumstance report this Hqs indicate subject glider landed and burned near Diersfordt, Germany, 24 March 1945. The bodies of Cpl St. John, T/5 Ackerman and Pfc Evans were recovered from burned glider. Sgt Goldstein was evacuated through 224th aid Station to hospital. No information available of subject pilot and co-pilot. It is believed Sgt Goldstein is at the US Hospital Plant #4403, APO 667."
Statement from David E. Rosengranis, Captain, AC, 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron:
"I was pilot of A/C number 42-92903, which was tow ship of glider number 43-27424, piloted by 1st Lt Duane E. Ellis, O541640 and the co-pilot was 2nd Lt Lorne F. Bulpitt, O926928. The visibility was one to two miles with haze caused by smoke, getting heavier from the Rhine to the LZ. The ceiling was unlimited.
We felt the glider as it was released at the LZ at 1236 hours. I watched the glider heading toward the landing area. The glider was still airborne and under control until it was out of sight due to the turn we made away from the LZ."
