First Lieutenant Witt served with the 95th
Bomb Group, 334th Bomb Squadron in England.
He was the pilot and one of eighteen
Army personnel killed (6 crew, 12 passengers) when
B-17F Flying Fortress #42-5791, nicknamed
"Ruthless," struck a hill, two miles southwest
of Newmarket, Wales, United Kingdom.

The bomber had departed for an "R&R" flight to

Flying through heavy cloud cover and in freezing fog,
the navigator relied on maps, and when they thought
they had reached the coast, descended out of the
clouds but they were off course by four miles and
still over mountainous terrain.
