Private Louie R Westmoreland, Texas, Service Number 38081304, served in the 217th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion. He came ashore with his unit at Utah Beach on June 26, 1944 and was seriously wounded during the 217th's antiaircraft defense of the city and port of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, France, at which time he was seriously wounded by an aerial bombardment. Westmoreland was evacuated to a hospital in England where he passed away on 9 Aug 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
