Wainwright served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-17G #42-102961, 526th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 16, 1942 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

Wainwright was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission, crashed into the sea due to damage done by enemy flak during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

There is a possibility that he actually resided in Delaware prior to the war.
