Zenas served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Waist Gunner on B-17F "Black Heart III" #42-30854, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Enfield, Grafton County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 29, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Textile Weaver and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30854, while on a bombing mission, was hit by German Flak which knocked off their left stabilizer causing them to crash into the North Sea.

Zenas was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack and crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
