Charles, who resided on Clinton Street, Delaware City, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He was killed by accident in Dorset, England. He had served in the Army for eight years and one month at the time of his death.

At the families request, his state of birth was added to his headstone (Pennsylvania) instead of his state of residence, as was normally done, (Delaware).
