Thomas served as a Sergeant & Engineer / Top Turret Gunner on B-17G "Belle of Liberty" #42-97479, 327th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Bristol County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 13, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-97479 took off with a crew of 9 from England on a bombing mission over Kaiserlautern, Germany. While over the target one engine stopped working and it was believed to have been from anti-aircraft fire. They attempted, at that time, to return to their base.

When they made an attempt at a first landing at the RAF East Kirby Station they overshot the runway and while making an attempt to come back for a second landing another engine stalled causing them to crash land two miles north of the RAF East Kirby Station in England and immediately catch fire and burned out

Thomas, along with his entire crew, was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
