1Lt. Sommer was lost in the line of duty on 1-20-1945 off the French Coast, and was on his 22nd mission with the 7th Squadron of the 34th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was flying out of Mendlesham, England.

1Lt. Sommer was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry G. Sommer of Peoria, Illinois, and the husband of Miss Mary Lou Frederick of Peoria. His body was lost forever.
