Second Lieutenant William E Smith, Georgia, Service Number O-886717, flew as navigator and radar navigator on B-17 bombers with the 401st Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group.
On 5 Nov 1944, he was "Fatally wounded by flak, died of wounds" on a mission to Offenbach, Germany in B-17 #42-97630 for which he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He had previously been awarded the Air Medal.
