Winford, who resided at 27 Lake Street, Middletown, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant with the Signal Corps, U.S. Army during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on October 21, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted as being employed as a linemen and also as being Single, without dependents.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in what was known as "Exercise Tiger". Exercise Tiger was a practice run off the coast of England for the D-Day landing.
