Second Lieutenant James R Pennal, Mississippi, Service #: O-758615, flew as co-pilot on B-17s with the 562nd Bomb Squadron, 388th Bomb Group. On 11 Apr 1944, during a mission to Rostock, Germany, in B-17 #42-32003, called "Shoo Shoo Baby", enemy aircraft attacked the aircraft. Bomber was last seen crashing in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Rostock. There were no survivors. 2Lt. Pennal had previously been awarded the Air Medal and following this mission was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
