Edward Raymond Mitchell was the son of Arthur Charles Mitchell and Ida Mae Limbach. He had one sister Francis Mitchell Miller.

Edward departed the United States in 1943 for the war in Europe, assigned to the 67th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group, (Heavy), 8th Air Force. On 11/18/1943 he flew on a mission over the Kjeller Airfield, Oslo, Norway. Edward was the pilot and plane commander and the bomber was called "E-Bar", Sn# #41-29139. Their primary target was the motor works at that airfield. The bombing raid was successful but not without a cost. Four bombers from the 67th Bomb Squadron and two from their sister squadron the 68th, were lost over the North Sea, either due to enemy action or running out of fuel. Edward's bomber was one of those. Identified as the "Mitchell Crew" they were declared to be Missing in Action (MIA). Edward and the crew were dropped from the MIA rolls and was officially declared Killed in Action (KIA) on 8/20/1945.

The Mitchell Crew consisted of the following men:
MITCHELL, EDWARD R. Pilot Capt. Sioux City, Iowa
SN 0-728013 KIA
OSBURN, RICHARD R. Co-pilot 2nd Lt. Washington, D.C.
SN 0-678132 KIA

SN 15095162 KIA
O'HARA, HENRY H. Belly Gun. S/Sgt. Brewster, New York
SN 32436174 KIA

HESTER, MILTON Jr. LW Gunner S/Sgt. Post, Texas
SN 18076405 KIA
MYERS, BILLIE B. Tail Turret S/Sgt. McCrory, Arkansas
SN 18166363 KIA

Edward's plane and crew, like the three others from the 67th, were lost with no survivors and almost no observers. As a result, the cause of this loss is not positively known. Edward and his crew were to be transferred to the 68th Bomb Squadron after this mission and some records show them assigned to that squadron the day they disappeared.
