Second Lieutenant Arthur M Maatta, service number: O-732992, bombardier, 527th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group. 2Lt Maatta had completed 32 combat missions when, on 25 Jun 1944, he was fatally wounded on mission to Coulanges, France. His duty station was in the nose of B-17G 42-97890 'Lil Satan' which received a direct flak hit. (see photo) He was severely wounded in both legs and with internal injuries, died of wounds prior to forced landing at base.
2LT Robert W Evans, Jr also died.
Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and Purple Heart.
