Joseph served as a Private First Class, 306th Quartermaster Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 9, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Post office clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in what is known as "Exercise Tiger" which was a practice run off the coast of England for the D-Day landing.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.

Service # 32732295

946 American servicemen were killed during this practice run, some by a German E-Boats and others by friendly fire.
