Staff Sergeant Frank J Kurtz, service #32707711, was a tail gunner with the 534th Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group. On a mission to Rheims, France, in B-17 #42-37754, called 'Who Dat - The Dingbat!', three gunners, including Kurtz, were killed in action. The pilot brought the severely damaged bomber back to base so the remaining crew could bail out. He and his co-pilot then turned the bomber towards the North Sea. They bailed out while it was still over land, leaving the remains of the three gunners in the bomber which crashed in the North Sea.
