Missing in Action
He was lost as a result of the crash of an AT-7 "Navigator" which was the military version of a Beechcraft Model 18. It was primarily used as a trainer for pilots, bombardiers, and navigators. A few were used for light transport duties. The plane was on a routine flight and the Missing Aircrews Report says that it went down in Greenland on 28 Nov 1943 having struck an ice cap.It was en route to APO 858 (Narsassuak, Greenland) from APO 859 (Sonderstromfjord, Greenland) - reported position of Latitude 65 degrees 38 minutes North by Longitude 50 degrees 13 minutes West (65.6333, -50.2167).
There were no survivors and all are commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing.
The three crewmen were:
Pilot - Captain, Elmer E Slaten U.S. Army Air Forces
Co-Pilot - First Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Forces~1st Arctic Rescue Squadron John A Davis
Navigator - Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Arctic Rescue Squadron George H Clarke
The passengers were:
Captain, U.S. Army Fayette F Krause
First Lieutenant, U.S. Army Simon B Chipley Jr
Staff Sergeant Hiram A Long
