Major. in P-38H 42-67020 while on a mission to escort bombers attacking at Bremen, Germany. His aircraft was attacked near Oldenburg, Germany by German fighters. He was able to elude the attackers but his aircraft was damaged. MAJ Joel attempted to fly the aircraft back to England but he and the aircraft crashed into the North Sea and he was killed. He was the Commanding Officer of the 55FG/38FS at the time.
